Music and Memory

Music can be a very powerful thing when trying to look back at our past memories. When we listen to certain songs, it can allow us to be completely immersed in a memory; this can range from good, bad, sad, or even angry. For me memories being linked to music has always been a prominent aspect of my life, especially when it comes to soundtracks from movies and games. When I was little, I quickly began watching films and getting hooked on the soundtracks, and the first movie soundtrack I fell in love with was 'The Imperial March.'

Here are three more examples of music that brings back memories:

1. When I was a little younger, I would play this game called Destiny 2 with my friends, and anytime I hear the music from this game, it just reminds me of when I would stay up for actually egregious hours of the night playing this one game. As I got a little older, I would sometimes play it when I was trying to get work done.

2. For me, when I think of memories from music, I get the feeling of nostalgia. I remember the first time I watched Jurassic Park and heard the score for the first time and having it on repeat for a literal week. It was really after that I got into watching movies just to hear the score.

3. An important thing for me when listening to music is the emotion behind it. Whatever emotion you feel from a song can give access to multiple memories. This song from POTC has unlocked a new emotion/memory each time I listen to it, which, in my opinion, is a very crucial element to making a good theme.

I've always felt music plays a very big role in how we look and process things, and memories are no exception. We use music for memories all the time for things like slide shows at funerals and weddings or maybe even birthday parties. For me, I've always seen music in regard to memories as either happy or sad and nostalgic.

  1. Hi Christian! I love that your music and memories around from soundtracks. I did not even think about that when trying to come up with mine, but there are genuinely so many soundtracks that bring up so many different memoires for me. Also you have great picks. These also bring back memories for me.

  2. Don't get me started on nostalgia 🥹. When I was younger, I used to be scared of watching Jurassic Park. I would watch it with my mom, WITH THE LIGHTS ON. That was a time had hahah!

  3. Hi Christian, I like the media theme song thread you stuck with here. Soundtracks are such a powerful story aid in movies and games, and the ones you picked are some prime examples. When you talked about how a theme can unlock multiple different memories it made me think of my own experience with this. It is interesting how hearing a melody or piece in a different light can make you think of completely unrelated different things, I think this is especially common in soundtracks since the devices composers use to score them are often similar to each other.

  4. Hi Christian! I like your choices, and I agree that the soundtracks you picked out are really good, especially the Imperial March. I think you summed it up pretty well when you said "I've always felt music plays a very big role in how we look and process things, and memories are no exception." I think you have a good grasp on how music plays its role in your life, and I enjoy reading your blogs!

  6. Hi Christian! I like all of the movie music you choose. I think that a lot people have specific memories with all of the pieces that you selected, including me. I have so many memories of my brother watching Star Wars over and over. I like that all of your music is connected, but still different!
